What is oilskin?

Few people know that Australia’s famous Oilskin was actually born at sea. Sailors learned that treating old sails with linseed and whale oil would produce incredible protective wet weather gear. Technology has come a long way since then, and Outback’s Oilskin is engineered to keep the wearer dry in the heaviest of thunder storms, while being strong enough to withstand working life on the land. Outback Oilskin is produced from 100% Cotton, enabling the fabric to breathe. This property lends the fabric to not only high performance wet weather gear, but stylish casual clothing such as jackets and vests as well.

What can I expect from a brand new oilskin product?

Your oilskin garment may have a light oil surface residue from the manufacturing process. This is normal, and it will evaporate over time with normal wear. You can speed up the process by using a hair dryer. Care should be taken so the garment does not come into contact with other fabric or leather items until the surface oil has evaporated.

How do I clean my oilskin product?

1) soak in a tub of cold water, or hang outside and hose down
2) remove debris by brushing with a stiff brush
3) rinse in cold water
4) allow the coat to dry naturally — good air circulation, not in direct sunlight or close to a heat source

How do I reproof my oilskin product?

Periodic use of Duck Back Reproofing Cream on seams, high-friction areas, and any dry spots will help extend the life and waterproof performance of your coat. Follow these steps for best results:

  1. Start with a clean, dry coat on a warm (ideally hot) day.
  2. Lay the coat in direct sunlight for a few minutes to warm the fabric until it feels soft and supple. Do not leave the coat unattended—extended sun exposure can cause bleaching.
  3. Warm the Duck Back dressing by placing the jar in the sun or setting it in a pan of hot water.
  4. Using a clean cloth, apply a light layer of dressing to the coat, adding a bit more to seams and friction points.
  5. Let the sun do the work. The heat will help the dressing melt and absorb evenly throughout the fabric.
  6. If it’s not warm or sunny, you can use a hand-held hair dryer to gently work the dressing into the cloth.

What do I do if it becomes stiff?

If your coat becomes stiff: Clean and dry it following the care instructions, then apply Duck Back Reproofing Cream as described above. This will restore suppleness and keep your coat comfortable and waterproof.

How do I store my oilskin product?

Clean and dry your coat according to instructions. Be sure it is completely dry before storing away for the season by hanging it in an area with unrestricted air circulation.

How do I remove mildew?

Mildew can develop if your coat is stored wet or in a high-humidity environment. Follow these steps to safely remove it:

  1. Work outside if possible. If not, a tub indoors will work.
  2. Prepare a cleaning solution: mix 1 part white vinegar with 2 parts water.
  3. Apply the solution using a spray bottle while scrubbing the coat with a stiff brush. Alternatively, pour the solution into a bucket and apply it directly with your brush.
  4. Scrub all oilskin areas thoroughly, including both sides of the fabric when possible.
  5. Rinse and dry: Hang the coat, hose it off, and allow it to dry completely.

For stubborn mildew, a second application may be necessary, or you can soak the coat in the solution for several hours after scrubbing.
